Autumn break

We had our traditional autumn break in our house in France, starting with 4 days of work for Piet, and dog walking and some gardening for Mary. The evenings were relaxing with a fire going, and a nice glass of red wine.

In the weekend we drove south to meet Piet's friends in Gigondas. We started in Hermitage, where we let Pippin run around the famous hill, covered with vines. This was followed by our usual stops at Pierre Amadieu and the Caveau in Gigondas, to properly fill up our cellars. In the evening Frits' 60th birthday was celebrated with a dinner in the village. The next day we started with a hike near the hotel, and then drove to Chateauneuf du Pape, for a tasting at Clos du Caillou, followed by lunch on top of the hill. In the afternoon we wrapped up this short wine trip at Croix des Pins in Mazan. Back at Hotel des Florets we did our usual efficient sorting, enjoyed a glass of Champagne and another nice dinner.

The next morning Piet's friends left early to drive back to Utrecht, and we had a long and pleasant hike in the hills around Gigondas. We drove home to 4 days of rain, relaxing inside, a bit of house cleaning, and a daily wet dog walk. The last two days it was dry, and Piet could take out his bike at last. We drove back to The Hague in the wind and rain, to start the grey months till Christmas, and hopefully will be back in France in January

Summer 2023 (II)

In the second part of our summer holidays Dorien, Lars and Ollie joined us in France. Piet had to go back to The Hague for two weeks to work, and returned for the last part of the holidays, with another week of tele-travail and two weeks of proper leave.

It probably reads like a broken record, but this time was spend hiking, cycling, trail running and some work around the house and garden, mentally all very relaxing. Pippin and Ollie enjoyed each others company, and played a lot together, in addition to a daily walk and cool down in the Sarenne river.

After 25 years Piet joined the local cycling club UC Oisans, which was revived recently, and is mainly run by English people, who live permanently in the area. He joined them on several rides and enjoyed the company (similar age and speed).

The weather had two faces: first a 10 day heatwave ('canicule' in French), followed by a 20 degree drop in temperature, and 3 days of rain. The last week of our holidays teh weather was perfect, with crystal clear skies, pleasant temperatures and ideal hiking and cycling conditions. The last days were spend cleaning the house and our terrain, ready for our return on October. Below are some pictures  to give an impression (with a keen dog model!).

Summer 2023 (I)

After dealing with our renovation in The Hague, and camping in our house for 3 months, we were glad we could leave this behind for several weeks and go to our full functioning house in France. Almost all work was finished, and we are now ready to receive the new kitchen early September, when we return. But first a well-deserved break!

In France Piet started with a week of tele-travail, whilst Mary dealt with the grass in our garden that wasn't mowed in more than 3 months... Pippin enjoyed the freedom in our garden, and the walks in the area. After a week Paula and Jasper arrived, for a combined work & holiday stay, as the start of their 6 week summer break. They did some climbing, cycling and hiking, whilst Paula ticked off a few days of work in between. Nephew Jeroen and his girlfriend Hannah dropped by on their return from Italy, and Jaspers brother and a friend stayed a few days and had their first real mountain experience.

The weather was great, not to hot, with an occasional rain shower during the night. We basically lived outside from breakfast till evening, and rounded off our days by watching the recorded Tour de France stage of that day, whilst enjoying a glass of red wine. A classic summer holiday for us!

Wine

On Monday morning Mary drove home from Troyes, and Piet joined his friends returning south, to taste and buy some wine, restocking our cellars. The traditional yearly trip was returning to the Burgundy and Rhone regions, targeting several new wineries. As usual a small van was rented, and when happily cruising along near Dijon suddenly there was no traction anymore, and we had to stop on the side of the highway. Initially we thought it might be lack of diesel, and help was called. Firstly, the van was towed away to a nearby garage in the wine village of Chevrey-Chambertin, were the problem was checked. It quickly became clear this had nothing to do with diesel, and after some time the owner told us that one of the engine belts had broken, and the van couldn't go any further. We called the insurance, and cancelled our tasting appointments and hotel for the day. There was initial mistrust, as we had mentioned lack of diesel to the rental company, so it took some time to sort out alternative transport. In the meantime we took a train back north to Dijon, found a hotel and a good restaurant, whilst waiting on news. Finally the insurance offered us two cars, as they couldn't arrange another van at short notice.

The next morning Paul decided to return home, as his mother had some health issues, and he took one of the cars. The rest of us drove south with the second car, compressing our original program in two days. Firstly, the car had limited space, so we had to buy with the handbreak on, and secondly we had a lot of driving ahead of us.

The first stop was at Domaine de la Mordoree, that produces Lirac and Chateauneuf-du-Pape red wines, and rose from Tavel. A good tasting was followed by a moderate purchase, and a short drive to Beaumes-de-Venise, where we made a chance visit to Domaine des Bernadins. They make red, white and sweet wines from this appellation. The next stop was at the Caveau in Gigondas, a place visited many times before. Here most wine makers of the village have their products available for tasting and sale, and there is a rich choice. To stay sane we selected some old favourites, and lastly asked the host to surprise us: this resulted in two excellent Gigondas wines (which happened to be two of the most expensive bottles for sale!). The night was spend in beautiful Vaison-la-Romaine, staying in a boutique hotel, and with dinner overlooking the town. Maybe better suited for a romantic weekend with partners, but still very enjoyable!

In the morning we returned north, and visited Domaine Durand, in the small appellation of Cornas, near Valence. Here prices have gone through the roof the last few years, but Durand's wines are still affordable, and of quality. More driving followed, to Chassagne-Montrachet, for an appointment with Heritiers Saint-Genys. On arrival we managed to find someone with some difficulty, who first pretended that the appointment was two days earlier, and then wasn't interested for an ad hoc tasting. Luckily we had another address, some 30 km further north, where we were received with open arms: Manuel Olivier, in Nuits Saint-Georges. After a short tour of the premises our host literally opened everything for tasting, up to a bottle of Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru; great, but way too expensive for us. This was followed by a last stretch of driving, to Chablis, for our final night. Dinner was in Les Trois Bourgeons, an interesting experience, with a young waiter who barely spoke French, and a Japanese chef who combined cooking great food, taking reservations and accepting payments all by himself.

Our last stop was at Sebastien Dampt, in Chablis. After we ended up at his private residence it took some effort to unearth an old email with the correct address, where we had an early morning taste of excellent white wines, topping off our breakfast. From there it was a straight drive back to Utrecht, where the bottles were sorted, and Piet was picked up by Mary with his harvest. The next step is a re-tasting, and critical comparison between the different wines. And enjoying them!

A short break in France

Mary has been organising a renovation of our kitchen for some time now, and finally the work was scheduled to start early April. As we will be camping in our house for a few months we decided to have a short break in France before this, and drove over for a week of holidays. Although it was still mid March skiing season there was hardly any snow left on the lower slopes and in the valley, and we spend the days walking with Pippin, and doing some work around the house. Piet even managed some bike rides, in shorts and t-shirt. A very relaxing week!

On the way back we had two stopovers. The first night we stayed in Solutre, in the southernmost Burgundy region, where we did a long hike through the hills and vineyards of the Pouilly-Fuisse appellation, followed by a wine tasting and nice dinner. The next day we drove further north, towards Troyes, where we met up with Piet's friends, who where heading south for their yearly wine trip. It was pissing down with rain, so we did a walk near the hotel through boring agricultural fields, but that didn't bother Pippin at all. Apparently there were lot's of small, smelly animals (mice?), and he was running and jumping through the fields like a headless chicken, getting rid of his cropped up energy. The day was wrapped up with another nice dinner, and Mary drove back home the next morning, whilst Piet joined his friends to return south.

And the renovation actually started early April!
